- For the Reported Incident of the same name, see Missing Child (112 Reported Incident).
- "Hello! Hey guys! Have you seen my grandson? Hello?? They... They... No one's reacting..."
Missing Child is a Call Incident that was added to 112 Operator with the Water Operations DLC. It is allowed to trigger only after Level-1 Calls have been unlocked (in Campaign mode, that happens on Duty #5). The call may spawn up to three separate scenes (including a search scene), and ultimately requires only police response, if at all. The call dialogue is completely predictable (no randomized responses from the caller).
The incident involves an old lady who had lost her young grandson at the beach. The operator can help the old lady figure out where her grandson has gone to, resolving the incident without any emergency response. However, it is also possible to initiate a search of the area, which discovers the grandson in the water, in which case he must be rescued by police.
For the best solution to this call, see this guide.
Opening Lines[]
| Speaker | Line | |
|---|---|---|
| Operator | 112, what's your emergency? | |
| Caller | Excuse me, I have a problem, I don't know how this could have happened... | |
Trigger Conditions[]
This incident requires the Water Operations DLC to be installed and active, otherwise it cannot spawn at all.
The Missing Child incident cannot trigger before Level-1 calls have been unlocked. In a Campaign game, that happens on Duty #5.
Once this call is triggered, it will not be triggered again for the remainder of the game - except in Freeplay mode if "Repeated Calls" have been enabled.
Structure[]
The Missing Child incident is a Call Incident, which begins with a phone conversation with a citizen. The call is completely predictable: it contains no randomized responses from the caller, and the outcome depends entirely on choices made by the operator; the same choices will always lead to the same results.
This incident may spawn up to three scenes: the Missing Child Scene, a Search Area, and the Found Child Scene. None of these sites is visible at first.
During the initial phone conversation, it is possible to determine the location of the Missing Child scene by asking the caller for her location. If the location of this scene was not acquired during the conversation, it can be traced, which takes approximately 450 real-time seconds (on SLOW game speed).
Promising the caller to send a search team reveals the Search Area, in the vicinity of the Missing Child Scene. This also happens if police are sent to the Missing Child Scene and question the caller, which can lead to an interesting exploit. Once the search is resolved, it reveals the Found Child Scene.
However, it is also possible during the conversation to lead the grandmother to her grandson. This raises the Ignore Penalty to the same value as the Reputation Reward for resolving the scene, so that the entire incident can be ignored for the maximum reward value. This is generally the preferred outcome, unless one wishes to use the exploit below to get even more points.
Doubled Child Glitch[]
Due to a scripting mistake, it is possible to find the child in two different locations during this incident, winning double the reward for this incident (+10 in total).
By default, you only get a +5 Reputation reward for completing the search and resolving the Found Child scene (at sea). Helping the grandmother find the child on her own adds a +5 reward to the Missing Child scene (on the beach). The game seems to expect that only one of these two scenes will be resolved, but it does not make sure that only one can be resolved.
The mistake is related to how the search area spawns. The script allows the search to begin in either of two ways:
- The operator promises to send units to perform a search.
- Police question the grandmother at her location.
In case #1, a reward is only given once the search is completed and the child is rescued from the water. There is no reward for resolving the grandmother's scene.
Case #2 exists as a backup, so that the child can still be found if the operator didn't promise to send the police. In this case, the police can just go to the grandmother's location and question her, which creates the search area.
The problem is that Case #2 is available even after the grandmother had already been reunited with her grandson during the phone conversation. The script doesn't ensure that questioning the grandmother doesn't spawn a search scene after her grandson has already been found, nor does it remove the reward for finding the grandson at sea. As a result, both the Missing Child and Found Child scenes carry a +5 reward, and both can be resolved to get their respective rewards.
This is how it happens:

Call Summary[]
The Missing Child incident begins with an elderly woman calling to report that her 11-year-old grandson is missing. They were both at the beach together, when the grandmother was distracted with a crossword puzzle and suddenly realized that the child had disappeared.
The operator starts asking the grandmother questions that might determine where the child has gone. The grandmother recalls him talking about ice-cream, so the operator asks her to go over to the nearby ice-cream booth. The grandmother does indeed find the child at the booth, and the operator marks the incident down as "ignored".
Alternative Ending[]
The operator can send the grandmother looking for her grandson all over the beach. At one point, she finds a child whom she thinks is her grandson at first (due to her bad eyesight), but then realizes it's not. This fruitless search wastes a lot of time. A similar thing happens if the grandmother is told to start calling out for her grandson. Other people on the beach aren't much help either.
Eventually, the operator could decide that it'd be better to just send police to look for the grandson. Units comb the beach and eventually discover the grandson swimming in the sea, far from shore. They pick him and and return him to his grandmother.
Negative Choices[]
The operator could come to the conclusion that the old woman is in fact mentally ill, and erroneously believes that she went to the beach with her grandson. He suggests that she go to a psychiatrist to get herself checked. Though the incident can still be completed normally, this comes with a hefty penalty.

Missing Child Scene[]
This scene only appears on the map once either of the following conditions is met:
- The caller was asked for her location.
- About 450 seconds of real-time have elapsed (on SLOW game speed) from the moment the conversation began.
This scene may only spawn in a Water district, and only at specifically-designated "waterfront" locations (beaches, harbors, etc.). This location - assuming the map includes one at all - is found right on the shoreline; despite technically being in the Water district, it can only be reached with land or airborne vehicles.
The scene contains either one or two police elements, depending on whether or not the caller has managed to find the grandson on her own.
Description[]
This scene takes place on the beach. The grandmother is always here. If the grandmother has been successfully instructed to find the child on her own, he will be here too.
Both the grandmother and the grandson are witnesses, requiring questioning by police.
Once the grandmother is resolved, the Search Area is spawned on the map if it hasn't already done so. This happens even if the grandson is already here (see Doubled Child Glitch, above).
Resolution[]
This scene must be reached within 1,000 seconds of real time (on SLOW game speed) from the moment it appears, or it will automatically fail.
The default reputation reward for resolving this scene is 0 - no reward will be won for resolving this particular scene.
The default penalty for ignoring this scene is -5, subject to multipliers from the current difficulty setting.
Both the reward and penalty are raise to exactly +5 if the grandmother has managed to find her grandchild by herself on the beach (dialog option GO CHECK). This allows you to ignore the incident immediately for the maximum reward; but it also allows exploiting the Doubled Child Glitch to earn twice that amount, instead.
Conversely, telling the grandmother to GO TO PSYCHIATRIST negatively adjusts both the reward and penalty by -3 points each.
Police[]

Search Area[]
A Search Area and Automatic Search Site can appear on the map during the phone conversation. Otherwise, they will appear once the Caller has been questioned at the Missing Child Scene. The search area will always be nearby the Missing Child Scene.
The Search Area is a rectangle, either 2 sectors wide on each for a total of 4 sectors. However, since it always spawns on the edge of the water, and search sectors cannot spawn on water, the total area can sometimes be as small as just one sector. One of these sectors (selected at random) contains the hidden incident site you're searching for.
Each sector requires 150 seconds of Search Work to complete - a very significant amount. This can be done by any unit. Once the specific sector containing the hidden incident site is completely searched, the hidden incident site appears and the search is over.
Resolution[]
There is no time limit to complete the search.
There is no reward for completing the search itself.
The penalty for ignoring the search is -5 Reputation points, subject to multipliers from the current difficulty setting. Furthermore, ignoring the search also automatically ignores the Found Child Scene, which carries its own penalty.
Once the search is completed, it reveals the Found Child Scene, described below.
Found Child Scene[]
This scene appears only once its specific search sector has been completely searched. All other search sectors, as well as the Automatic Search Site, disappear from the map.
This scene will always spawn in the water, close to the shoreline. Only water and airborne vehicles can reach this scene. For technical reasons, it may not actually spawn within the search area, but will always be nearby.
The scene contains a single police element.
Description[]
This scene takes place in open water. The only element here is the grandson, who must be questioned by police.
Resolution[]
There is no time limit to reach this scene.
The Reputation reward for resolving this scene is always +5.
The penalty for ignoring this scene is always -5, subject to multipliers from the current difficulty setting. This penalty applies whether the search has been completed or not.
Resolving this scene adds a +5 reward to resolving the Search Area, but since this scene cannot appear on the map until the search area has already been resolved, the bonus is meaningless.
