911/112 Operator Wiki

For the Reported Incident of the same name, see Man Overboard (112 Reported Incident).
"He wanted to swim, so he jumped off the boat. After a couple of seconds something went wrong and he started struggling and splashing."

Man Overboard is a Call Incident that was added to 112 Operator with the Water Operations DLC. It is allowed to trigger only after Level-1 Calls have been unlocked (in Campaign mode, that happens on Duty #5). The call only has one scene, which requires medical response and basic police response. The call dialogue is completely predictable (no randomized responses from the caller).

The incident involves a young woman who has gone on a boating trip with a friend. The friend jumped in the water, and for some reason began to drown, unable to get back into the boat. The operator instructs the woman on how to maximize her friend's chances of survival, though medical units must still get there to rescue him out of the water, while police question the woman. Depending on the outcome of the phone conversation, the young woman and her friend could both drown.

Opening Lines[]

Speaker Line
Operator 112, what's your emergency?
Caller Help! I think my friend is drowning! And it's just me in the boat!

Trigger Conditions[]

This incident requires the Water Operations DLC to be installed and active, otherwise it cannot spawn at all.

The Man Overboard incident cannot trigger before Level-1 calls have been unlocked. In a Campaign game, that happens on Duty #5.

Once this call is triggered, it will not be triggered again for the remainder of the game - except in Freeplay mode if "Repeated Calls" have been enabled.

Structure[]

The Man Overboard incident is a Call Incident, which begins with a phone conversation with a citizen. The call is completely predictable: it contains no randomized responses from the caller, and the outcome depends entirely on choices made by the operator; the same choices will always lead to the same results.

This incident will only spawn a single scene, whose location can be determined just by asking the caller. If the location of this scene was not acquired during the conversation, it can be traced, which takes approximately 450 real-time seconds (on SLOW game speed).

The phone conversation can have a profound effect on the scene itself, with three possible outcomes: The caller manages to throw her friend a lifeline, in which case he requires rescue, treatment, and transport to hospital; The caller could jump into the water and drown together with her friend; or the friend could begin to die of exposure. Fortunately, the choices that lead to negative consequences are fairly obvious. Furthermore, the call doesn't even need to be completed in order to get the best outcome.

Reaching the negative outcomes also adjusts the Reputation Reward and Ignore Penalty for this scene.

Call Summary[]

The Man Overboard incident begins with a young woman calling 112 to report that her friend is drowning. They were out on a cruise in a little sailboat, when the friend decided to go for a swim. However, once he jumped into the water, he began flailing and couldn't get back into the boat. The boat is slowly drifting away.

When asked by the operator, the woman replies that she hasn't swum in a long time, and has no idea how to steer the sailboat. Thinking quickly, the operator instructs her to look for a life ring and throw it to the drowning man, while taking the direction of the wind into account so that it carries the life ring towards her friend. With his last ounce of strength, the friend grabs onto the life ring, but appears to have lost consciousness due to exhaustion.

Medical units hurry to the site and pull the man out of the water. After some first aid, he is quickly taken to a hospital. Police question the caller, to get the entire story.

Negative Endings[]

Based on descriptions of the man's movements and actions in the water, the operator could decide that he wasn't actually drowning, but was instead just faking it to scare the girl a little. The caller apologizes for calling 112 without good cause. However, the man was not faking it, and with no help in sight he eventually becomes exhausted and drowns.

Alternatively, the operator could forget to ask the woman if she can swim (or ignore her reply that she hasn't swum in a long time) and instruct her to jump into the water to rescue her friend. The woman hangs up the phone, jumps into the water, and drowns.

Both of these outcomes incur hefty penalties to your reputation.

Man Overboard Scene[]

This scene only appears on the map once either of the following conditions is met:

  1. The caller was asked for her location.
  2. About 450 seconds of real-time have elapsed (on SLOW game speed) from the moment the conversation began.

This scene may only spawn in a Water district, and only some distance from the shore. This may include the deeper parts of small lakes or wide rivers, or far into the ocean. The scene can only be reached by water vehicles or airborne vehicles.

By default, the scene contains one police element and one medical element. However, the phone conversation can change this to two dead bodies, which require either police or medical units to resolve.

Description[]

This scene takes place in open water. Both the caller and her friend are here, though the nature of their respective elements is highly variable depending on decisions made during the phone conversation.

By default, the drowning man is injured, and must be treated by medics and taken to a hospital. However, if the woman was told that her friend is just pretending to drown, he begins to lose health at a rate of -0.1 Hit Points per real-time second (on SLOW game speed) from that point on. With a starting health value of 70 Hit Points, that gives you about 700 seconds to get to him and treat him before he dies.

By default, the caller is a witness, and must be questioned by police.

Telling the caller to jump into the water to save her friend will instantly kill both herself and her friend, turning them into dead bodies. These must be removed from the scene by either police officers or medics.

Resolution[]

This scene must be reached within 800 seconds of real time (on SLOW game speed) from the moment it appears, or it will automatically fail. Note that if the drowning man starts to die during the phone conversation (by selecting HE'S JOKING), he begins to drown and will die within 700 real time seconds - resulting in a massive score reduction.

The default reputation reward for resolving this scene is +5.

The default penalty for ignoring this scene is -5, subject to multipliers from the current difficulty setting.

Both the reward and penalty are adjusted negatively by -3 points if the caller is told that HE'S JOKING. In this case, if the drowning man is indeed left to die, both scores drop by another -5 as soon as he perishes.

Telling the caller to JUMP IN THE WATER negatively adjusts both the reward and penalty by -7 points, instantly.
