911/112 Operator Wiki

Fatal Gunshot Wound is a Scripted Call Incident featured in 911 Operator. This call only has one storyline, in which a white police officer reports fatally shooting an unarmed, young black man whom he thought was pulling a gun on him.

This call was added in the Every Life Matters DLC. It occurs only in Boston, at the very end of Duty 0. It is the first Scripted Call in a series of events that lead first to Protests and later Riots in the city.

Plot[]

This call has only one storyline, and two endings (depending entirely on the operator's choices).

Though the plot ends here, the Protests that follow on the next Duty in Boston are the direct result of this storyline.

Summary[]

A police officer named Williams, badge number 258, calls dispatch to report that he had just shot a man named Danny Rond. He describes Rond as a young black man. Williams says he'd received a report of theft in the area, and then observed Rond trying to jimmy open a car. According to Williams, he approached Rond, who initially fled; but then turned back towards Williams for a moment and reached into his vest. Williams, believing that the man was reaching for a gun, fired and hit the victim in the head, killing him on the spot. When asked, Williams admits that he did not find a gun on Rond's body.

The operator informs Williams that an ambulance will arrive, together with a police sergeant who will strip Williams of his badge and weapon pending a shooting investigation. Williams is outraged, accusing the operator of not knowing what police work is actually like, out on the streets.

Though the police begin an investigation into the shooting, the incident sparks multiple large-scale protests against police brutality throughout Boston.

Operator This is dispatch. What happened 258? Reputation +10.
Caller I shot a man, send an ambulance to <address>. Location discovered.
HOW DID IT HAPPEN?
Operator Understood 258, how exactly did it happen?
Caller I got a call. The suspect... The suspect didn't stop when I told him to! I shot the kid!
WHAT EXACTLY DID HE DO?
Operator I need you to walk me through how things unfolded. What happened when you arrived at the scene?
Caller He was trying to jimmy the car, I told him to put his hands on his head and step away from the vehicle. He looked at me and took off. Then I saw him reach inside his jacket, so I assumed he was carrying a gun. So I fired a shot... Send someone quick.
POLICE WILL COME
Operator Alright, I've got an ambulance on the way and I'm sending a sergeant to your location. Reputation set to 10.
Caller I don't need backup. I just need an ambulance to issue a death certificate.
THE POLICE ARE COMING FOR YOU
Operator I'm not sending police as backup. They need to examine the scene and take your statement, as well as your badge and gun... at least temporarily. Reputation set to 10.
Caller Whaat? Are you serious? I was just doing my job! I was protecting myself! Everything was done by the book. Fuck, are you gonna lock me up?
THAT'S THE PROTOCOL
Operator Williams, you know the protocol for an officer involved shooting. Wait for your sergeant to arrive on scene.
Caller Fine, have it your way. I'll wait here. Call ended.

Choices to Avoid[]

AMBULANCE and JUST AN AMBULANCE will both result in negative Reputation upon resolving the call - a huge drop from the +10 you would otherwise get for this call.

Trivia[]

This call is loosely based on the shooting of Michael Brown in 2014, which sparked the Ferguson riots. There are several references from this call to the Michael Brown incident, including the name of the shooting officer (Williams in the call, Wilson in real life) and the inclusion of a link inside the call script file to a YouTube video of news coverage of the real life shooting. The circumstances of the Michael Brown event, however, are somewhat different from those described in this call.

The Michael Brown incident gave rise to the chant "Hands up! Don't shoot!" based on unconfirmed reports that Brown had indeed attempted to surrender when he was shot. This chant can be heard as part of the looping background sound effects accompanying the Boston Protests and Riots that follow this call, which were recorded during the real-world protests.

The DLC that added this call to the game - "Every Life Matters" - is named after the slogan "Black Lives Matter", which gained widespread popularity during the Ferguson protests.
