For the 112 Operator Reported Incident, see Childbirth (112 Incident).

Childbirth in a Traffic Jam is a Generic Call Incident featured in 911 Operator. This call has only one storyline, in which a caller reports that he is stuck in traffic and his wife is about to give birth. Though the call is almost entirely linear, there is one random factor that could trigger an alternative ending in the form of a breech birth - which is described in this article as though it was a separate storyline.

As a Generic Call, Childbirth in a Traffic Jam may be triggered at any time during Free Play mode.

During Career play, it will only occur once.

Opening Lines[]

Speaker Line
Operator "911, what's your emergency?"
Caller "My wife is giving birth!"

Randomized Plot Structure[]

For nearly its entirety, this plot is linear: Events occur as a direct result of the player's decisions.

However, there are two point during the conversation where the caller may give one of two different answers, based on completely random chance. One of these points is very minor, allowing you to get back on track immediately without issue; but the other is a "breech birth" which is a serious medical condition. There is a 50% chance of triggering a breech birth while giving the correct instructions to the caller on delivering the baby.

The breech birth scenario essentially ends the conversation about halfway through, before most of the Reputation bonuses can be collected, and even denying you the chance to IGNORE the conversation. This makes such a difference that this article treats it as a separate storyline. The random roll is made only when the baby begins breeching, and there is no way to tell whether it's going to happen or not.

However, there is a way to avoid the random roll entirely by intentionally making a mistake in the instructions to the caller. Doing so will remove 1 Reputation point from your potential reward, but ensure that the conversation plays out to its end. The Optimal Conversation sections below follow this route.

Reputation[]

This call has a baseline Reputation reward of +3 for resolving the call On Site.

At multiple points during the call, the Reputation reward can increase or decrease by one point based solely on the operator's choices. Thus, it is possible to navigate through them correctly and pick up a total of Reputation reward of 6 by the end.

There is one exit point early on that allows you to send units and resolve the call for just +3 Reputation, but without having to spend almost any time on the conversation itself (this conversation is very long otherwise). A separate chapter below shows how to do this.

Note that if Plot 2 is triggered, you can only receive a reward of 3 Reputation. The Optimal Conversation outlined below for Plot 1 shows how to avoid this ending, but your total Reputation reward will be only 5 points if you follow it.

Dialog Choice Resolve Call Reputation Ignore Call Reputation

Ignoring the Call[]

As seen in the table above, the script constantly sets the Ignore Reputation penalty to -3. This is done to ensure that if you lose too many points by making the wrong choices, you won't "accidentally" end up being able to ignore the call prematurely.

Nevertheless, at the very end of this conversation, you get the option to tell the caller to DRIVE ON YOUR OWN. This sets the Ignore Reputation award to 2, allowing you to IGNORE the call for that many points.

This is useful in case you don't have any units to spare. However, if you do have any medical units nearby, it's always better to send them - because the same dialogue choice will give you 3 Reputation points regardless of whether or not you've made any mistakes during the conversation.

However, if you follow the Optimal Conversation paths, you are likely to get even more than 3 points, so only choose DRIVE ON YOUR OWN if you really do want to IGNORE this call. You'll still have to navigate through the entire conversation to get there though, which is a huge time sink.

Plot 1: Normal Birth[]

This is the normal path for this call, from start to finish. However, if you select CAN YOU SEE THE HEAD? about halfway through the conversation, there is a 50% chance that it will instead veer off permanently into Plot 2.

Summary[]

A man calls 911 to report that he is stuck in a traffic jam with his nine-month-pregnant wife, whom he was taking to the hospital to give birth. Her contractions are getting stronger, with less and less time apart.

The operator explains to the caller that emergency units may take some time to arrive. The caller panics, and needs to be calmed down. The operator then begins giving him instructions on how to deliver the baby. He tells the caller to strip his wife from her waist down and place her on a flat surface - the back seat of the car. He instructs the caller and his wife to relax, and soon enough the baby emerges, head-first. The caller is instructed to catch the baby as it comes out.

As soon as the baby is out, the operator asks the caller to check whether it's breathing, and if necessary, to clear the baby's airway and pat it on the back to induce breathing. The operator then instructs the caller to place the baby on his mother's stomach, then check the umbilical cord to make sure it's not still pulsating. When that is determined, the operator tells the caller to tie the cord with some clear piece of string or shoelace.

Finally, the traffic jam begins to clear, but the operator tells the caller to wait for the ambulance anyway, as units are already close by. The medical team arrives and provides basic care for the mother and child, allowing the caller to take them the rest of the way to the hospital on his own.

  • The mother is always lightly injured with 90 Hit Points. She requires medical attention, but not transportation to hospital.
  • By default, the newborn baby is also lightly injured with 90 Hit Points, and can be treated on site.
  • If the baby did not start breathing autonomously immediately after birth, she will be Bleeding at a rate of -0.5/sec from that moment in the conversation onward. This means you have 180 seconds from that point to get to her and treat her, which should be plenty of time. This also means that she will need to be transported to hospital after treatment.

Operator Is your wife having contractions?

Caller I-I'll try...
Caller What should I do first?
TAKE OFF HER CLOTHES
Operator What you're gonna have to do is expose your wife from waist down. So you're gonna help take her pants off. She shouldn't have anything below the waist.
Caller Sure.

Caller Done.
RELAX AND WAIT
Operator Now, your wife should try to relax and breath deeply. She'll probably have an urge to push very soon.
Caller Okay.
Caller Relax, sweetheart. Take a deep breaths. Yes, like that. Everything will be okay.

Operator Okay, wait until the baby is out. You'll need to catch her and protect her from falling.
Caller Okay, okay. Darling, you can do this!

RUB HER BACK
Operator Don't panic, sir. If she's not crying you may need to clear her airway. Use your little finger to remove any mucus from her mouth, then turn her over, face down, and pat her back.
Caller Okay. . . . . It worked! Oh, Jesus, I'm so happy, Lucy is alive!
(Continue here in either case...)
PUT CHILD ON MOTHER'S STOMACH
Operator You should put the child on mother's stomach.
Caller . . . . . . .
IS IT PULSATING?
Operator Check if the umbilical cord is still pulsating. Reputation +1.
Ignore Reputation set to -3.
Caller No, it isn't!
Operator Find something to tie the umbilical cord. It could be anything: ribbon, string or even a clean shoelace.
Caller Okay, I got a ribbon.
Operator Now, you should make a knot about 1,5 inches from the newborn's belly.
Caller . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . It's done. Should I cut it?
Operator It isn't necessary. You can wait with that until you get to the hospital.
Caller Okay... The traffic jam looks a bit smaller. Should I drive to the hospital or an ambulance will arrive here?
WAIT
Operator Just wait, the ambulance is almost there. Reputation +1.
Ignore Reputation set to -3.
Caller Okay, thank you very much sir.

Choices to Avoid[]

There are several choices that will only make matters worse.

Selecting WAIT near the very start of the conversation will end it prematurely. This still gives you +4 Reputation after medical teams resolve the plot (as shown below), but you can get up to +6 by following the conversation to its conclusion instead.

Telling the caller to FIND SOMEONE TO HELP decreases your reward, and potentially ruins the entire call if you then tell him YES. There's no benefit to pursuing this option.

Telling the caller to PUSH, PULL, GIVE CHILD TO YOUR WIFE or DO IT will each decrease your reward by -1. However, as per the Optimal Conversation above, selecting PULL is the only way to avoid veering into Plot 2.

Other than these, any choices that are not part of the Optimal Conversation above will needlessly delay the conversation for no benefit whatsoever.

Plot 2: Breech Birth[]

This plot has a 50% chance to trigger during Plot 1, if the caller is asked CAN YOU SEE THE HEAD?, which is the "correct" choice at that point in the plot. This leads to a breech birth, which is significantly less rewarding than a normal birth, and puts the baby in danger.

This plot can be avoided completely by choosing PULL at that same juncture, as explained in the Optimal Conversation above, at the cost of 1 Reputation point.

Summary[]

As the baby comes out, the father realizes that its feet are coming out first - a condition known as a "breech birth" - which is medically dangerous to the baby.

Realizing that there's nothing to be done without professional medical help, the operator instructs the caller to just wait for the medical teams to arrive and take the baby to a hospital.

  • The caller is Resolved by default, and does not require any interaction.
  • The mother is always lightly injured with 90 Hit Points. She requires medical attention, but not transportation to hospital.
  • The newborn baby begins to bleed at -0.3/s as soon as the call veers from Plot 1 to Plot 2. This means it will need both medical treatment and transportation to hospital. Fortunately, the baby starts at 90 Hit Points, which means you have 300 seconds to treat and rescue it, which is plenty of time.

Caller Oh God, we'll try. Please, hurry! Call ended.

Shortcut[]

The sheer length of this conversation is itself a problem: You cannot inspect or manage other incidents properly until it's done. As a result, it may be preferable to reduce your Reputation reward by a small amount simply to make the conversation much shorter.

The Optimal Conversation outlined below skips almost the entirety of this call. Send units to the incident site to treat the baby and mother on location (no transportation to hospital needed) for +4 Reputation points. This is only 2 fewer than the maximum achievable for this call, and saves a lot of precious time.
