Bear in a Bush is a Generic Call Incident featured in 911 Operator. This call has a single storyline, in which a man reports hearing what he thinks is a bear in his back yard.
As a Generic Call, Bear in a Bush may be triggered at any time during Free Play mode.
During Career play, it will only occur once.
Opening Lines[]
Speaker | Line |
---|---|
Operator | "911, what's your emergency?" |
Caller | "Hi. I know it sounds silly, but I think there might be a bear in my backyard." |
Randomization Bug[]
Bear in a Bush is a simple, linear plot, in which only the operator's responses are the only thing that determines what happens.
However, due to a scripting error, there is one particular point in the conversation where the game randomly selects one of the operator's responses for him (presenting it as though it was the caller's dialogue instead). This results in an unintentional randomized plot structure.
Fortunately, the faulty dialogue branch in question is completely avoidable, simply by not selecting DESCRIBE THE SOUND
. The Optimal Conversation below avoids this question anyway.

Plot[]
This call has only a single plotline. The operator may actively direct the conversation towards several endings, with one being clearly superior to the others. It is outlined here.
There is also an alternative ending that was supposed to be very bad, but instead leads to a very positive IGNORE (see Ignoring the Call, below).
Summary[]
A man calls 911 to report that he believes there's a bear in his back yard, saying he can hear it rustling and growling in the bush, but can't see it due to the darkness.
The operator is initially incredulous, especially due to the caller's strange descriptions of the sounds he's hearing. Nevertheless, he asks whether there was any food left in the yard, and the caller confirms that he'd had a barbecue party the previous day.
The operator decides that the scenario warrants a check, instructing the caller to hide inside their house and sending a couple of units to the location, where they do discover a bear in the man's back yard. Firefighters wrangle it into a cage, and it is quickly transported to a veterinary institution.
On Site[]
- On arrival, units will find the caller in his house and a bear in the back yard.
- The caller must be questioned by police.
- The bear is a simple Obstacle which requires 80 seconds of Tech Work to resolve.
Optimal Conversation[]
This Optimal Conversation is guaranteed to give you +7 Reputation when you resolve the incident on site. It completely avoids a glitch in the conversation that randomizes a response and could lead to a much less lucrative ending.
If you prefer to IGNORE the call instead for only +3 Reputation, check out Ignoring the Call, below.
Choices to Avoid[]
Most importantly, do not select DESCRIBE THE SOUND
, as this causes a glitch that will randomize your next response. This could either end up back on track, end the conversation with a +6 Reputation reward, or end the conversation with an +1 Ignore Reputation reward.
Ignoring the Call[]
Due to scripting errors, this call does not ensure to keep your Ignore Reputation negative when you make bad choices. The result is that if the Reputation reward ever drops to a negative value, the Ignore Reputation reward becomes positive.
This means that there are no fewer than three points in the conversation where it can be IGNORED to gain Reputation points, where the game clearly meant for you to lose points. The most notable of these is when sending the caller to check whether there really is a bear in the bush, which rewards you with +3 Reputation points when IGNORED.
The conversation below shows how to achieve this.

The operator decides to make sure by sending the caller himself to make sure that there actually is a bear out there. It turns out that there is indeed a bear - and it attacks the caller.
